Every year, you are faced with the question: What should I give as a gift? It should be something special, personal. How about a unique item, for example a self-painted plate or mug made of high-quality ceramic? In Wiebke Lüdemann's shop, the”Porzellanfräulein“On Preystraße in Hamburg-Winterhude, you can do just that: paint your own ceramics. The works are then coated with transparent glaze, fired at 1000° and can then be used daily, as they are even dishwasher-safe.
When Mrs. Lüdemann took the plunge into self-employment eleven years ago and became a porcelain lady, she found the shop on Preystraße by chance, which she lovingly renovated. In her parents' house, a farm, a love for old things was awakened. There are also old cement tiles in the hallway, making the choice for this floor covering easy. The handcrafted production of the tiles gives the “creative café” that certain something. Ms. Lüdemann chose the playful Art Nouveau pattern number 139, which looks subtle and elegant thanks to the choice of colors in gray and white. The large old buffet cabinet, which stood unused in the parents' cellar, has now become an eye-catcher in the shop and houses many painting supplies.
Anyone can paint ceramics! The motif can be predrawn or paused with pencil, other techniques include dabbing, stamping or scratching, stencils or masking tapes can be used. The options are varied and with the variety of raw ceramics such as cups, plates, bowls, vases or jugs that the porcelain lady provides, each piece is unique. Ms. Lüdemann's works of art are then coated with colourless glaze and fired and can be picked up after one week.
As a trained hotel specialist, Ms. Lüdemann is particularly interested in making her customers feel comfortable. With the “Porzellanfräulein”, she has created an atmosphere in which guests like to get together and create something of their own. She enjoys looking at concentrated faces first and then at happy faces. For example, painting together can be planned as an “event” for birthdays or other anniversaries, for team building companies or with friends or family.
And by the way: even though things may be a bit scarce for Christmas presents by now — there are plenty of occasions to make others and yourself happy painting pottery together and then make it with your own work. Valentine's Day, for example, is also coming soon!
